Our Cran-Lemon Wedding: The Only Thing That Went "Wrong"

Happy 2011, everyone! I'm back from my holiday blogging break to dive into the rest of our wedding recaps. I'm going to do it in chronological order so you can see how the day unfolded. I'm warning you now that I may not be able to post more than one recap a week. Things are busy in other areas of my life, but I'll try to post at least once a week from now on. Here we go!

The morning of our wedding, I woke up bright and crazy early at 5:20 am. By 6:00 I was showered, my hair was washed and I was wearing the "Bride" bathrobe that a friend had given me at my bridal shower. The other girls (my bridesmaids) were still asleep. They didn't need to be up until 7:00, so they slept in the bedroom area of our hotel suite while I got ready in the living room. My friendor hair stylist (Mr. S) was supposed to arrive at 6:00 to do my hair.

I'm not normally a morning person, but that morning I was wide awake, ready for what I hoped would be a perfect day. I felt really happy and anxious for everything to start. I plugged in my iPod speaker and played some Florence and the Machine.

Happiness hit her like a train on a track
Coming towards her, stuck still no turning back...

When 6:15 rolled around and Mr. S still hadn't shown up, I began to worry. My hair needed to be done around 7:00, when my makeup artist was scheduled to arrive. Our morning time line was tight--we had a first look and other photos planned before our 12:00 ceremony. Mr. S being late was not good!

I called his cell. He answered and said he would be there shortly. I waited. Twiddled my thumbs. Called again. Finally, around 6:40, Steve called. Why would Steve call me? By this point, my bridesmaids were awake so I threw my phone at one of them. I was being superstitious and didn't want to talk to him before our first look :). MOH L found out through Steve that the car Mr. S was driving from Manhattan to Long Island had broken down on the highway one exit away. OMG! Since Mr. S knows Steve, he called him instead of me so I wouldn't worry. Steve called my Dad, who was also staying in our hotel, and they went in my Dad's car to pick Mr. S up.

After my breakdown at the rehearsal dinner two days before, I thought I would be freaking out about Mr. S not being on time. It was only an hour into the morning and our schedule was already screwed up. We were going to have to rush to get everything done. But, probably due to the joy of it finally being my wedding day, I remained calm. Zen-like, even. I knew that my hair would get done, and all that mattered was I was a few hours away from marrying the (warning: cheese ahead!) love of my life!

So we adjusted the time line. My makeup artist got to the hotel a little before 7:00 and she started right away. By the time she was done, Mr. S had arrived and got straight to work on my hair. The morning was rushed and not exactly what I expected, but everything worked out in the end.

And you know what? In a way, the delayed time line was fortuitous because I got many more "getting ready" shots than I'd expected. Our photographer arrived on schedule at 8:00, around the time my makeup was done and hair was in process. I was supposed to be ready to get into my dress at that time, but since I wasn't ready, he snapped away and got some nice shots of everything. It wasn't exactly a leisurely morning but I enjoyed getting ready with the girls and singing along to Glee soundtracks.

My hair ended up looking even better than at my trial, which I was thrilled about.

Ready to get into *the* dress!

I think being part of MOH L's wedding a couple of months earlier, and reading all of the advice of wedding bloggers prepared me for the fact that something would go wrong on our wedding day. It's inevitable and knowing that ahead of time helped me deal with it when the problem presented itself. We were lucky in that only one thing went "wrong" the whole day, and in the end it didn't prevent us from having an amazing wedding.

Next up: what the boys were up to...

Did something go wrong at your wedding? How did you deal with it?

Catch up!

  3. Way to go for staying calm and rolling with it. We also ran late in leaving for the first look, by almost half an hour, but we were luckily able to make up the lost time and still get in all the photos we wanted. I think both your hair and makeup turned out beautifully, and the "getting ready" pictures are great!

  5. I'm glad it all worked out - your hair and makeup looked great, and I love the "bride" bathrobe. The only thing that went "wrong" for us was the weather not cooperating. Fortunately, we picked our venue because it had a great option for a back-up plan!

  8. Yay for Dad's who help out in morning craziness!! Everything looks awesome - you look gorgeous, the girls look gorgeous - and of course the hotel rooms at that place rule.

Totally off topic: tell me you didn't LOVE the beds there. The 2nd time we were there I got *just* tipsy enough to peek under the sheets to see if I could find the label & brand of the mattresses. No luck. Those beds are the comfiest of any hotel EVER! LOL
