Sweet Home

Images via oh my deer.

Steve and I live in a charming and little (read: old and too small) apartment in a neighborhood in Brooklyn that we LOVE. But, if you know anything about New York City, it's expensive to live here! Brooklyn's a little more affordable but the cost-of-living is still more than other parts of the country. We're looking to move to a bigger place within Brooklyn when our lease is up this spring and we're excited to settle in and nest as soon-to-be newlyweds.

But we'll still be renting.

What we really want is a house of our very own.

We're doing our best to save, save, save so this dream can come a reality by the time we're thirty (we'll be twenty-six when we get married). So when I'm being lazy and don't feel like making a bagged lunch for work, or want to buy something I don't really need, I pop on over to one of my blog obsessions, Young House Love, swoon over their lovely home and remind myself of our goal!

We realize that if we had a much simpler, smaller wedding, we could use our wedding budget for a down-payment. But a wedding is another one of our dreams (we're only doing this once!) so we're going to just make sure we spend wisely and not dip into our house savings. We also aren't expecting to buy a place in Brooklyn (we prefer a house over a condo/coop and we can get a little more for our $$ in the suburbs) so we'll take advantage of the city life while we can.

What are your post-wedding goals?

  1. Oh that is so great to have that goal...and to be wise about the savings. I always get family members who ask me why we are spending a down payment on a house on our wedding...like you, I only plan on doing this once and want to go as big as I can without going into debt! I don't have to worry about the savings quite so much right now as my fiance already has a house that my daughter and I will be moving into. It's a nice 3 bedroom perfect for our family on a cul-de-sac with great neighbors. However, it's about 25 minutes north of where I live now and I don't want to leave my part of South Orange County! So eventually, I am hoping we can move back down south a little bit to where I've been for about 20 years now. Here's hoping you reach your goal!

  2. Mad props for being so committed to saving money, I know how hard it is!

  3. As you know, we're purchasing a house during our wedding planning and likely will close before the wedding. Our post-wedding goal is to buy new furniture for the house.
