Which Dress(es) Will Make the Cut?

This week, I went with my maid of honor L bridesmaid dress shopping. Our plan was to narrow down the options at the two stores to dresses that fit the following criteria:

--Color in the cranberry/wine color scheme
--Cocktail-length dresses, since this is a semi-formal daytime wedding
--Price at around $200 or less.

A bonus would be if there were more than one dress in the same color and fabric, so if the girls happened to want different dresses, they could do so but still look like a cohesive bridal party.

Luckily both stores we went to (Priscilla of Boston and J.Crew) had plenty of dresses that fit all of these criteria (including the bonus!), and L and I were able to narrow them down to a few options for the other girls to try on in April.

The Contenders...

Priscilla of Boston/Vineyard Collection
Color: Wine
Fabric: Satin Yoryu
Price: Below $200

With only an hour to try dresses on, this appointment was very rushed, especially since we spent the first twenty minutes figuring out which of their colors matched my cran-lemon scheme. Once we settled on their "wine" color, we found a few dresses we liked.

The wine color on the screen is messed up, but it's basically a burgundy.

J.Crew
Color: Spiced Wine
Fabric: Silk Chiffon
Price: Around $200

J. Crew's Soho NYC store allows you to make appointments to try on their wedding line. This was amazing because I prefer that the girls try them on before buying them (even though J. Crew has a great return/exchange policy if they were to buy them online). Their appointments run for an hour and a half, which was plenty of time for L to try dresses on, especially because I already knew which color I wanted when I got there. L and I both loved the silk chiffon dresses because a) the spiced wine color looks more vibrant in this fabric, and b) the fabric itself is just really pretty. These are the dresses I like the most...

J.Crew
Color: Spiced Wine
Fabric: Cotton Cady
Price: Around $200

If for some reason, the silk chiffon dresses don't work for my other two bridesmaids, we'll try the cotton cady collection. L and I liked a few dresses here, but the spiced wine color in this fabric looks a little different and the dresses being cotton made us wonder if they would look too casual or wrinkle easily. I don't think they'll look too casual and it appears the cotton dresses are the most popular ones at J. Crew. I can see why!

When my other two bridesmaids come in April, we'll all head back to these stores. Right now my first choice dresses are the J. Crew Silk Chiffon ones. But we'll see then which dress or combination of dresses make the cut!

  4. I love them all too - no help! But at least that means they'll look great regardless of which you end up picking!

  6. Hi, I found your blog through my lovely blogger buddy Party Planner Gal. Congrats from a recent NYC bride!

First, love wine and the dress choices so far are pretty fabulous. I'm leaning towards Priscilla of Boston dresses.

Second, keep your eyes peeled (and sign up for the e-mail newsletter) for Priscilla of Boston sample sales. I went to one in the spring last year looking for my bm's dresses. I didn't find our color but got a $20 sample for myself (it was a long, blue chiffon very rewearable dress). Other dresses were mostly $20 - 50, maybe $100 at most. I was hoping to buy my ladies dresses that day but the sizes didn't work out. eBay could be worth checking out also.

Oh and I am doing a few bridal related giveaways in the next few weeks (garter, veil or fascinator) so please feel follow along free to enter!

  7. We chose the Jcrew ones (2nd from left). I haven't seen them yet, they are at my brothers house and his wife says they are really pretty.
